Fall 2022 RV Trip (page 6)

On Saturday November 5th we went to the main campus for the Homecoming Game and events surrounding it.

We were early enough to get a picture with Tommy Trojan before the line became oppressive.

In the athletic department they display their Heisman trophies. I would have thought they would have displayed their many national championship awards but didn't see them (just too many maybe).

The Doheny Library main branch.

These card catalogs are no longer in use (computers) but they were massive in their day (this is a small fraction of the total).

We had a special tailgating section for the Keck School of Medicine. This area was filled with desserts later.

We took a few silly photos in their photo booth.

Then we went and watched the band get us pepped up for the game. From there we walked en masse to the stadium.

The band performed again inside the stadium before the game (they played at halftime too).

Lots of pregame hype. The flashing lights in the stands are cell phones that used an app that programmed when they would flash so the stands sparkled.

Finally, the game. USC handled Cal and won by 6.

We took Sundays off so I spent part of it in the hot tub. Becky chose the wash tub (laundry).

Monday we got back to touring. Our first stop was the Reagan Presidential Library.

A reproduction of the Reagan Oval Office.

They had Air Force One from the Reagan years housed there.

This is the "football." It has the nuclear codes and is called the football because it is passed from agent to agent to stay with the President.

This is the state room on Air Force One. It is where the president continued to do presidential business while in the air.

Marine One was there as well.

Our next stop was in Yorba Linda at the Nixon Presidential Library. If you think you know everything you need to know about Nixon, I would encourage you to go there. This is a reproduction of his Oval Office.

Nixon did not sit at the Resolute Desk. He used the Wilson desk. This was not named for the President but for Vice President Henry Wilson (President Ulysses S. Grant's VP) because his bust sat upon it. It is now the Vice President's desk again and Kamala Harris uses it.

I liked making Nixon a photobomber.

Tuesday we pulled up stakes and headed north. Solvang was on the way so I got some Swedish Meatballs.

They also had a Hans Christian Andersen museum.

We put the camper in at Cayucos. They are on Morro Bay and have this nice pier.

Morro Bay has this famous Morro Rock.

A lovely sunset.
